Long-Term Rust Protection: What Works for Multi-Year Storage

What makes a rust preventive suitable for multi-year storage, and how KG-8 and KG-9 are used.

Multi-year rust protection needs a durable film, clean dry parts, proper packing and a stable storage environment. MOERY KG-8 is rated for 3–5 years on precision parts, and KG-9 forms a thick wax film for large equipment; protection time still depends on storage conditions.

What changes for long-term protection

Short-term protection tolerates a thin film. Long-term protection needs a more durable film that resists humidity cycling, condensation and salt, which is why it is formulated differently from in-process oils.

KG-8 and KG-9

KG-8: fast-drying, non-tacky and dust-resistant, with 3–5 years of protection for precision parts. KG-9: thick wax film applied hot at 90 °C, suited to large equipment and export items.

Practices that extend protection

Start with clean, dry parts; drain surplus oil; let the film dry fully before packing; use sealed plastic bags; keep storage dry and out of direct sun; inspect samples periodically.

Frequently asked questions

Can long-term oils be used outdoors?

KG-9 wax film resists sunlight aging, but covered storage is always recommended for multi-year periods.
