A four-step selection guide: metal, protection period, environment and application method — with MOERY grades mapped to each case.

Choose a rust preventive oil by matching four things: the metal (steel, cast iron, electrical steel, plated or sintered parts), the protection period you need, the environment (indoor, humid, marine, export shipping) and the application method (dip, spray or brush). Then confirm the choice with a short trial on real parts.

Step 1 — Metal

General steel: KG-2 / KG-3. Electrical steel laminations: KG-2A. Cast iron: KG-2B / KG-3B. Plated, black oxide or phosphated parts: KG-2C / KG-3C. Powder metallurgy: KG-4A / KG-4B. Magnesium alloys and multi-metal parts: KGY series.

Step 2 — Protection period

Months to about two years: fast-drying grades. Two to five years or sea shipping: KG-1, KG-8 or KG-9.

Step 3 — Environment

High humidity or wet parts: KG-10 (water-displacing), or KG-4A / KG-4B and KG-2C / KG-3C (1,000 h humidity test). Marine and salt-laden air: KG-8 or KG-9.

Step 4 — Application method

Dip: most grades. Spray or brush only: KG-8. Heated brush: KG-9. Dip, spray or brush: KGY series.

Always check

Downstream processes (painting, welding, plating), safety limits (flash point) and the cleaning method for removal.
