Rust Protection for Export Shipping

How to protect metal parts and equipment during sea freight: condensation, salt air, packing and product choice.

MOERY Technical TeamPublished: October 25, 2026Updated: October 25, 2026

Export shipping exposes metal to temperature swings that cause condensation inside the packing, and to salt-laden air near the sea. Use a long-term rust preventive such as KG-8, KG-9 or KG-1, apply it to clean dry parts, seal the parts in plastic, and add desiccant where appropriate.

Why export is harder than storage

Containers can experience large day–night temperature differences, so water vapor condenses on cold metal. Voyages also last weeks to months.

Recommended approach

Choose the film by size and value of the part: KG-1 for large equipment and precision components, KG-8 for precision parts needing a dry surface, KG-9 for large heavy items. Pack in plastic, and keep the film intact during handling.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra protection does a plastic bag add?

For MOERY steel grades, bagging adds roughly one extra year (for example, KG-2: 1–2 years, or 2–3 years with plastic-bag packing).
