Water-Based Rust Inhibitors: When and How to Use Them

What water-based rust inhibitors do, where they fit in a process line, and how they differ from oil-based preventives.

MOERY Technical TeamPublished: October 25, 2026Updated: October 25, 2026

Water-based rust inhibitors are added to cleaning baths, coolants and rinse water to protect ferrous parts between process steps without a solvent carrier. They give short-term protection; for storage and shipping, follow with a rust preventive oil. MOERY develops water-based formulations on request.

Typical uses

Between machining and cleaning, after washing before drying, and as a final rinse additive before oil application.

What to specify

Metals present (including aluminum or copper alloys), required protection period, water hardness, bath temperature and downstream processes such as painting or welding.
